In the Law & Order: Special Victims Unit episode “The Book of Esther,” NYPD Detective Rollins (Kelli Giddish) races to a New Jersey home to rescue Esther Labott (Rebekah Kennedy), a girl being held captive by her “bible-thumping” religious father, William Labott. NBC says the story is “ripped from the headlines” – referring to David and Louise Turpin, the California parents who allegedly held their 13 children captive — the couple was arrested in January 2018 for torture and child endangerment. The Turpin children were found malnourished and shackled to their beds. David and Louise Turpin have pleaded not guilty to all 42 charges. One of the most disturbing facts revealed in this Law & Order: SVU episode is that incest is not illegal in New Jersey.
The character of William Labott is portrayed by Ray McKinnon. McKinnon is known for his roles on Fear the Walking Dead (Proctor John), Sons of Anarchy (Lincoln “Linc” Potter), and Deadwood (Reverend H.W. Smith), among others. McKinnon is also recognized for his roles in the films Mud (Senior), O Brother, Where Art Thou? (Vernon T. Waldrip), and Bugsy (David Hinton). Law & Order: Special Victims Unit airs Wednesdays at 9pm on NBC, right after The Blacklist and right before Chicago P.D.
