In The Simpsons episode “Lisa Gets the Blues,” the Simpsons’ flight to Gainesville gets re-routed to New Orleans. In The Big Easy, while Bart is intrigued by voodoo and Homer fills his plate with Cajun shrimp, Lisa regains her confidence as a jazz musician. In NOLA, saxophonist Lisa meets a trombonist.

The trombonist on The Simpsons is voiced by musician Trombone Shorty. Born Troy Andrews, the 32-year-old musician was born and raised in New Orleans and grew up in a musical family in the Tremé neighborhood. (Trombone Shorty appeared in seven episodes of the HBO series Tremé.) As a teen he was a member of the Stooges Brass Band, and then joined Lenny Kravitz’s horn section. He’s performed with everyone from U2 to the Red Hot Chili Peppers. The Simpsons airs Sundays at 8pm on FOX, right before Brooklyn Nine-Nine.
