The Dateline episode “The Pink Gun Mystery” investigates the April 6, 2014 murder of Robin Spielbauer in Amarillo, Texas. Robin was the first wife of Jeremy “J.D.” Spielbauer, who while married to Robin had an affair with Katie Phipps. Spielbauer later married Phipps, and then had an affair with his ex-wife Robin. When Robin was found beaten and shot dead, Phipps was arrested and indicted. Her pink-handled .22 gun was the gun used in the murder. Phipps spent more than 400 days in jail until she was cleared of the crime in July 2015 (cell phone evidence proved she wasn’t at the scene of the crime). Randall County District Attorney James Farren admitted it was a “rush to judgment” but he also said Phipps “didn’t help herself with some of the things she said while locked up.” Farren said of Phipps, “She has every right to be upset, but one of the people she should be upset with is herself.”
Phipps thinks Farren’s comments are “pretty low” considering she was in jail for more than a year — and she doesn’t appreciate the comments from Len Walker, Spielbauer’s attorney, either. Walker thinks Phipps is guilty, but Spielbauer was arrested and is the main suspect now.
Phipps said: “I don’t think Mr. Walker has seen the evidence,” Phipps said. “I was incarcerated for this. I, of course, had the right to see it all. I know what they’ve got, and they’ve probably have a lot more than I know of. Good luck, dude. If Mr. Walker is going to represent him (Spielbauer), good.” Phipps is currently taking pre-law classes at Amarillo College, and says she’ll work with Farren (the DA) as Spielbauer’s case continues. Dateline airs Fridays at 9pm on ABC.
