TV host Ryan Seacrest returns for Season 16 of American Idol. He welcomes three mega-star singers as judges: Lionel Richie, Katy Perry, and Luke Bryan. (Farewell Keith Urban, Harry Connick Jr., Jennifer Lopez!) During the two-hour premiere episode on Sunday, March 11, the judges will watch and listen to more than a dozen aspiring pop stars during the first round of auditions. During one audition, all three judges get out of their chairs to listen in awe. While in the moment, the 13x-Grammy nominee Katy Perry dons a pair of purple and gray socks…on her hands. See photo above.

There are a number of reasons why people wear socks on their hands. 1. Babies do it so they don’t scratch their faces while sleeping. (Katy is no baby.) 2. Adults do it while they sleep to keep their hands soft. (She’s wide awake.) 3. Burglars wear sometimes wear socks on their hands to avoid leaving fingerprints at the scene of a crime. (The 33-year-old millionaire doesn’t need to steal a thing.) It could be a new way to show appreciation for an artist on stage. With her hands protected Katy can applaud as hard as she wants and not have to worry about hurting her hands. If only they were shark socks. Remember when Jennifer Hudson kept throwing her shoes on stage on The Voice? American Idol airs Sundays at 8pm on ABC.
