On the first round of Blind Auditions on The Voice Season 14, Britton Buchanan, a 17-year-old singer/musician from North Carolina, performs the Ray LaMontagne song “Trouble” with his acoustic guitar. Returning coach Alicia Keys hits her buzzer first. Blake Shelton and Adam Levine follow soon after. When Britton finishes, rookie coach Kelly Clarkson is the only one who didn’t buzz in — but then it’s revealed that Adam has been Blocked. Host Carson Daly explains to Britton’s family backstage that “They blocked Adam, so he’s out of it. I think Blake did it.” It’s a new Voice rule. Every coach gets one opportunity to block another coach. They can use it just once. While Blake denies that it was he who blocked Adam, Britton tells Adam how much he loves that song “I Love L.A.” that he did with Randy Newman. (See video below.) With that, Adam advises Britton to go “100 percent with Alicia Keys.”
When Blake finally admits that it was he who blocked Adam, Britton throws Blake a bone by telling the country star how great his song “Austin” is. “Austin” was the hit song from Blake’s debut eponymous album which came out in 2001, the same year Britton was born! The Voice airs Mondays and Tuesdays at 8pm on NBC.
