On the MasterChef episode “Holy Cannoli,” the contestants split up for a team challenge to create a dining experience using local ingredients. They are serving the meals to the purveyors of the ingredients – butchers, farmers, beekeepers, and herb growers. When MasterChef co-host Christine Tosi checks in with Caitlin “Cate” Meade who she calls “my Chicago gal,” Cate says she’s using “a little smoking gun action.” She is literally using a device that looks like a gun to smoke some almonds “to give them a nice toast” for her marinated hangar steak.

When Tosci asks if she usually uses a smoking gun in Chicago, Cate explains that last Father’s Day she bought her father a smoker so she and her family have been spending a lot of time in the backyard “smoking everything we can.” MasterChef airs Wednesdays at 8pm on CBS.
