The Dateline episode “The Intruder” investigates the 2014 shooting of Rachel Owens who was experiencing early dementia. The 55-year-old was staying at the home of friends Steven and Carol Chabot in Saco, Maine when an intruder came in, shot Steven three times, and shot Rachel four times while she was sleeping. (They both survived. Carol wasn’t shot.) Three hours later, Rachel’s husband of 36 years, Gregory Owens of Londonderry, New Hampshire, was pulled over by police, taken in for questioning and eventually charged with attempted murder. Prosecutors say Greg’s motive to murder his wife was to get rid of what stood between him and a fresh start with his longtime mistress.
In July 2016, Gregory Owens was sentenced to life in prison. At the sentencing, Judge Nancy Torresen told Owens: “You’re deceitful, and you’re mean. I don’t see any possibility of you rehabilitating yourself.” Dateline airs Fridays at 10pm on NBC.
