On Return to Amish, Mary Schumaker travels to Florida to check in with Jeremiah Raber and his new wife Carmela. After Mary has some “fun in the shun” (doing things she couldn’t do if she wasn’t shunned from the Amish community — like ride a bike and go swimming), she invites Carmela to go shopping. Carmela lives in Florida now and she doesn’t have appropriate clothes for the beach.
Carmela says, “I don’t wear bathing suits. Growing up in a cult, we had a policy to dress modestly. Showing too much skin was a sin.” She adds, “One time, I waved and my sleeve went down like this (she demonstrates a long-sleeved shirt barely slipping down her wrist), and I got in big trouble.” Of course Mary can relate, she doesn’t feel comfortable in English clothes. However, Mary says to the camera: “But I definitely think Carmela should show off some of her skin because she is pretty. She’s not Amish. She can.” Return to Amish airs Sundays at 8pm on TLC.
