One of the first acts to perform on America’s Got Talent Season 12 was standup comedian Preacher Lawson. The 26-year-old did well but the act was short, too short for judge Simon Cowell who asked Lawson for “one more joke.” Lawson barely blinked an eye when he launched into another bit about his grandmother and her spirituality. She’s so spiritual that she isn’t afraid of dying, which bothers him whenever he’s in the car with her. She’d also pray before she called an ambulance. Lawson knocked it out of the park and got four yesses.

After the performance, Lawson (and host Tyra Banks) called his grandmother, Virginia Phillips, to tell her how it went. (It was her birthday, in fact.) “And thanks for letting me make fun of you on TV,” Lawson says with a sly smile. America’s Got Talent airs Tuesdays at 8pm on NBC.
