The reviews of Baywatch are surfing in and even with expectations mitigated by the TV show source material it doesn’t sound good from the critics’ perspective. (CNN says “Baywatch Movie Sinks like a stone.”) But given recent history, that’s probably just what producers want to hear. You know what else wasn’t a hit with critics recently? Donald Trump, for one. But — for better or worse — he sure did well at the box office. Back to the movie biz, the latest Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie, a Michael Bay production, suffered ridicule in reviews and made more than $200 million at the box office.
The list below got crushed by critics generally, but each made nearly $150 million — or much, much more — at the box office. Inspiration for the Baywatch team.
X-Men Origins: Wolverine: “You won’t miss much here, really. Honestly, giving this movie three stars seems a bit generous for me.” How about $373 million at the box office.
The Smurfs: “Purchased for a young boy who watches movies constantly. He did not seem to enjoy the Smurfs.” Um, can you say $563 million at the box office?!
Fantastic Four: “I have pretty low standards for movies. If you can even somewhat entertain me for a couple hours, I’m not unhappy. But this movie was absolutely terrible. ” Just $168 million, what a pity.
Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End: “How they went from the masterful script of the first film to this is astonishing.” BUT $963 million.
