John Oliver can find anything amusing and galling at the same time — that’s his gift and it’s the perfect formula for the world in 2017. His Trump takes are savage and Brexit jokes and jeremiads are all sharply dagger-filled, helped out by the accent that makes the Brit quit even more meaningful. Of course as a Briton, Oliver is in the painful position of always having to be concerned with what happens in France. With French elections coming up, Oliver used his HBO show Last Week Tonight to point out how important these elections are for the “fate of Europe” and to beg France not to “f*$k it up.”
Calling far-right populist Marine Le Pen “a demagogue a$%hole,” Oliver pleaded with France to do the right thing — unlike America and Britain have. The carrot he holds out to the French? “You in France love nothing more than acting like you’re better than Britain and America.
