The Dateline episode ‘Fury’ investigates the murder of 18-year-old Sarah DeLeon in Kansas City, Kansas in 1989. She was found stabbed to death (“too many times to count”) along the railroad tracks, a popular spot for teenagers to party without supervision. At the crime scene, there were no fingerprints. No weapon was ever found and no witnesses. Five years later in 1994, another young woman, Diana Ault of Independence, Missouri, was murdered. More than 20 years after DeLeon’s murder, in October 2016, police announced that they had a suspect in DeLong’s murder and that they believed her death might be linked to the killing of Ault.
In September 2016, Carolyn J. Heckert, a 48-year-old real estate agent, was arrested and charged with first-degree murder (DeLeon’s). No charges have been filed in connection with Ault’s death. The Facebook page “Justice for Sarah 1989” is tracking Heckert’s legal procedures and exact whereabouts. On February 6: Heckert received a continuance in her preliminary hearing. The new date is April 7. The Justice Facebook page says: “Our suspect is in the Wyandotte County Jail, Pod A, Cell 11, Bed 1.” Dateline NBC airs Fridays at 10pm.
