Avocados from Mexico is appealing to American suburban moms and hipsters in its Super Bowl LI ad. In the spot, comedian Jon Lovitz is featured as a neckless hypnotist. In front of a backdrop designed to look like subliminal slices of avocados, Lovitz whispers and spins about everyone loving guacamole and then he stops on a dime and demands that viewers “Eat it!”
Jon Lovitz isn’t exactly known for being a good marketer — he was most recently fired on The New Celebrity Apprentice by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. But Schwarzenegger isn’t the boss standing in the way of Lovitz’ success this time. That impediment is former Celebrity Apprentice host turned President of the United States Donald Trump who’s threatening the country of Mexico with a 20 percent tax on products exported to the U.S. (because Mexico won’t pay for a wall). That’s a big financial hit if imposed — and Super Bowl ads already cost a bundle. Lovitz’s hypnotism has a lot of work to do. Think American suburban moms will be willing to spend 20 percent more on Avocados from Mexico?
