The American Greed episode ‘Badge of Dishonor’ investigates the 2015 death of police Lt. Joe Gliniewicz of Fox Lake, Illinois. At first, it appeared that Gliniewicz died heroically in the line of duty. But after an investigation, it was concluded that Gliniewicz had staged his suicide before being caught stealing and laundering thousands of dollars from a police department program that mentored young people who aspired to become law enforcement officers. The investigation revealed that Gliniewicz had deleted 6,500 text messages with at least two other unidentified people.
On the day of his death, Gliniewicz radioed in that he was pursuing three people on foot. He asked for backup and then his communication dropped. He was found shot dead. His pistol found at the scene. A massive manhunt (involving 400 law enforcement officers) was launched. American Greed airs Mondays at 10pm on CNBC.
