The 24 To Life episode “Family Divided,” follows the last 24 hours before two people report to jail. One is James, who tries to get some closure from his mother who turned him in. As a child, James turned her in twice: he claims her drug addiction led to theft and neglect. The other criminal featured is Candace, a mother of four who believes she’s protecting her youngest child Zoe by telling her she’s going to the doctor instead of jail. Candace, who has been sentenced to four years in prison, says she doesn’t want Zoe to think that she’s abandoning her.
Whether you believe Candace’s decision to lie to Zoe is a smart one or not, watching little Zoe say “Goodbye, mama, I love you” is just heartbreaking. 24 To Life airs Wednesdays at 10pm on LMN.
