Kay Wenal, a 60-year-old former model, was brutally killed in her Georgia home in 2008. There were no signs of forced entry. Her wealthy husband Hal Wenal found Kay in the kitchen with her throat slashed. (Hal Wenal was initially a suspect but was cleared.) Three months after Wenal’s murder, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution received a letter written with letters cut out of magazines. The writer claims to have loved Kay, and Kay supposedly loved the writer but then Kay didn’t keep her promise which caused her demise. Former FBI profiler Mary Ellen O’Toole says most “cut and paste” letters are the work of women. O’Toole wonders if the letter was created by a woman trying to throw investigators off the trail of the killer. The brutality of the crime leads investigators to believe the murderer is more likely male.
A neighbor said he saw a strange man near the Wenal home on the day of the murder. Below is a police sketch released by the police department. If you have any information regard the case of the man in the sketch, please call: Gwinnett County Criminal Investigation Division anonymous tip line: 1-770-513-5390. The Wenal murder case will be investigated on 48 Hours, which airs Saturdays at 10pm on CBS.
