Painting Donald Trump as a malcontent prone to conspiracy theories, Hillary Clinton brought up more than his claim that the presidential election is “rigged” against him. Clinton said Trump makes the same accusation whenever he loses at anything. “There was even a time,” Clinton said, “when he didn’t get an Emmy for his TV program three years in a row and he started tweeting that the Emmys were rigged against him.”
Clinton was likely referring to the tweet below, which Trump posted in 2012. (He posted similar theories in 2013 and 2014, too, practicing his now famous double-down technique.) So what shows did The Apprentice lose to? The Apprentice was eligible for an Emmy in the Best Reality-Competition Series category, which was established in 2003, the year before The Apprentice debuted. The Apprentice was nominated twice in the category, never winning. In fact only three shows in total have won this particularly Emmy, with The Amazing Race winning it a total of 10 times. The Voice has won three times, including three of the last four years. Top Chef sneaked in for its sole win in 2010.
The Emmys are all politics, that’s why, despite nominations, The Apprentice never won–even though it should have many times over.
