In her reveal, Winfrey confesses to an unusual lack of confidence in her ability to reach her audience. “I didn’t know what to say that could actually pierce through all the noise and the chaos and the disgusting vitriol that’s going on and actually be heard,” she told Jakes about why she hasn’t spoken much until now. Winfrey left no ambiguity about who she supports though. Winfrey is behind Hillary Clinton, saying that Clinton’s candidacy is a “seminal moment for women” and that “there really is no choice.” Winfrey’s backing of fellow Chicago-dweller Barack Obama in 2008 was seen as a major coup for the Obama campaign because of Winfrey’s independent elan and powerful and broad influence. It’s strange to consider, given all her success, that Winfrey believed she couldn’t “actually pierce through all the noise.”
