Mild-mannered, sweet-voiced Dan Shafer sang “Marry Me” on The Voice and Blake Shelton accepted his musical proposal. Shelton turned his chair and the country star’s face lit up with surprise and joy. The voice that sounded so young and fresh to him with his back turned was still young and fresh — but it belonged to a 56-year-old man with white hair, crinkly eyes, and a humble story.
Shafer had given up performing and dedicated himself to the hard job of being a family man, including caring for a son with Crohn’s Disease. But now Shafer’s “family is grown” and he wants another shot at the limelight. Shelton told Shafer, now on Team Blake: “You are everything I love about this show.” The Voice airs Mondays and Tuesdays at 8pm on NBC.
