Former GOP presidential candidate and Texas governor Rick Perry (2000-2015) is competing on Season 23 of Dancing with the Stars. (He’s been paired with professional dance partner Emma Slater.) On Instagram, Perry said he’s going to use the DWTS stage – literally and figuratively – “to help build awareness for improving the lives of our nation’s veterans.” He admits he’s also excited about getting “into the best shape I’ve been since I served in the Air Force.”

After graduating from Texas A&M University in 1972, Perry was commissioned as an officer in the United States Air Force. He left the Air Force in 1977 with the rank of Captain, returned to Texas, and went into business farming cotton with his father. Dancing With the Stars premieres Monday, September 12 at 8pm on ABC.
