Former high-flying County Councilman Stephen Nodine of Mobile, Alabama was accused of shooting his mistress of six years, Angel Downs, to death in 2010. She had been shot in the head and found dead in her driveway. A neighbor said he saw a red pickup truck leave quickly after the shot, and believed Nodine was in the truck. Nodine says: “Every bit of evidence shows that it was a self-inflicted gunshot wound.” In 2012, Nodine pleaded guilty to felony perjury (he claimed he could no longer afford to pay his attorney) and harassment as part of a deal in which prosecutors dropped the murder charge. He served two years in jail and was sentenced to 36-month probation.
In December 2015, Nodine was charged with two “technical violations” of his probation. He failed a drug test and “spent too many days in New Orleans beyond the time imposed by his probation officer.” Accordng to AL.com, a drug test on November 6 showed Nodine had opiates and marijuana in his system. Nodine claims that he “may have eaten pot brownies at Halloween event and was notified a few days later, and that he ingested cough syrup that contained codeine while battling whooping cough.” Nodine was sent back to jail for 57 days for the violations. Prior to his return to jail, Stephen Nodine was interviewed by 48 Hours which airs Saturdays at 9pm on CBS.
