Hillary Clinton published an editorial at CNN warning the LGBT community that Donald Trump is a danger. “In communities across the country, high schools are celebrating same-sex prom kings and queens. Transgender people have been living with greater openness and joy. There’s no denying that our country is moving forward,” Clinton wrote. There’s only one problem. What if we went backwards, Clinton asks, saying it would be “all too easy for our next president to roll back much of the progress we have made.”
A president may not be able to dictate major changes in public opinion, which in the case of equal rights for LGBT people has experienced a sea change toward greater recognition, tolerance and acceptance. But a president can effect laws, especially a president who controls the Supreme Court nomination process. Clinton says Trump would roll back federal protections that would pave the way for states to discriminate. Clinton also says Trump would back the First Amendment Defense Act, allowing discrimination against LGBT people based on religious belief.
