Ryan Girgis was 17 years old when he was attacked in his bedroom, duct taped and forced into a closet while his mother, Ariet Girgis, was being murdered (her throat was slashed). Ryan’s father, Magdi Girgis, was considered a person of interest since there was a restraining order issued against him by his wife — who planned to divorce him after 24 years. Magdi Girgis, a respiratory therapist, was facing domestic violence charges which would result in the loss of his medical license. Almost 10 years after Ariet’s brutal murder, Magdi was charged with conspiring to commit murder, and with murder for financial gain and murder to prevent testimony.

Ryan Girgis said, “All along, I knew he [his father, Magdi Girgis] had something to do with it.” Magdi Girgis was sentenced to life in prison. At his sentencing, he maintained his innocence. “You are about to sentence an innocent man,” Girgis said. “And God is my witness. I had nothing to do with the killing of my wife.” Dateline Saturday Night Mystery will air its investigative report “The Man Who Wasn’t There” on April 9 at 8pm on NBC.
