St. Benedict’s Prep is a Catholic prep school in the city of Newark, New Jersey where the students are in charge. They lead school-wide meetings and peer support groups, all under the eyes of headmaster, and Benedictine monk, Edwin Leahy, who’s been with the school for 38 years. Leahy and some of the school’s leaders/students will be interviewed for a segment of 60 Minutes (March 20). St. Benedict’s Prep is an exemplary school for many reasons. One being its graduation rate: 98 percent of those who graduate go straight to college.
St. Benedict’s has a faculty with 51 members who teach a student body of 548. (48% are Black; 32% Hispanic; 13% White; and 7% Other). Approximately 80 percent of the students who attend St. Benedict’s Prep cannot afford the $12,500 tuition and have been awarded financial aid. 60 Minutes airs Sundays at 7pm on CBS.
