Lamar’s UNTITLED UNMASTERED can be seen as a prequel to To Pimp A Butterfly
How do you top yourself if you’re Kendrick Lamar, the most prolific musical artist working today? Lamar is steeped in Grammys — and the man releases new material every five minutes, or so it seems. Lamar is a creative whirlwind, with an eye on toppling Prince for production and Jay Z for influence: he’s a bad man and the hottest performer on the planet right now (and that probably includes Adele).
So to top off the very thirsty Lamar faithful, the everflowing MC takes a page our of the Star Wars playbook, which says to go forward you sometimes go back. So Lamar just released what critics are calling a prequel of sorts to his hit album To Pimp a Butterfly. Lamar told 2dopeboyz that he held back a “chamber of material” from that release for various reasons — rights issues included. Now the Lamar material created in the process of putting together To Pimp a Butterfly is out too: it’s called UNTITLED UNMASTERED. Lamar’s vault of unreleased material promises to be very full. He may even be able to go full Star Wars — and make a trilogy prequel. This won’t be the last drop from Lamar this year. Bet on it.
