Former Winter Hill Gang mob leader James J. Bulger aka Whitey Bulger is serving his life sentence at the US Penitentiary Coleman in Sumter County, Florida. It took 16 years but Bulger was finally apprehended in 2011 and convicted in 2013 of ordering 11 murders (in addition to extortion, money laundering and drug trafficking). Coleman is a high-security prison with approximately 3000 inmates, about 50 miles northwest of Orlando. Bulger isn’t the only gangster at Coleman. Former NYPD detective turned Gambino enforcer Stephen Caracappa is serving a life sentence there too.

Amine El Khalifi is serving his 30-year sentence at Coleman, too. The Moroccan man pleaded guilty to “attempted use of a weapon of mass destruction for plotting to conduct a suicide bombing at the US Capitol Building” in February 2012. He thought he was working with Al-Qaeda but was actually dealing with undercover FBI agents. El Khalifi will be released in 2038.
