JT Holmes is a handsome man and a professional extreme skier/sportsman. Holmes likes to ski base jump off of tall buildings and mountains — including the 13,020 ft. tall Eiger in the Swiss Alps. For his Eiger “dream run,” Holmes brings Anderson Cooper and his 60 Minutes camera crew to watch. From the summit, Holmes flies down superhero style with a speed wing and then touches down on skis headed for Eiger’s rock cliff at blazing speed. There he launches into “a free fall of some 20 seconds before yanking his parachute” to break his 100 mph descent. You have to see it to understand.
Cooper asks Holmes, “What goes through your mind before you take off?” Holmes says “There are two mind sets. There’s Evel Knievel which is kind of kamikaze. And then there’s the James Bond.” Cooper asks, “Which are you?” Without pause, Holmes answers with a charming smile, “I’m Bond.” Holmes does have a career in Hollywood. He helps stunt teams coordinate speedflying scenes for movies including Fast & Furious and Transformers: Dark of the Moon, and Godzilla, among others. If the 60 Minutes footage of Holmes appears like a commercial for GoPro, you’re not far off. Holmes is a “GoPro athlete.” 60 Minutes airs Sundays at 7:30pm on CBS.
