In news that could see a rise in sales of duct tape and the unwelcome return of the mullet, CBS is making a new version of MacGyver. The original series — about the secret agent who improvised his way out of trouble using his knowledge of science — starred Richard Dean Anderson and first aired in 1985 on ABC. James Wan, director of the mega-hit Furious 7, is producing the reboot alongside one of the original show’s producers, Henry Winkler.
The reboot is being planned as a prequel of sorts, and will feature a young MacGyver. “Twentysomething Angus MacGyver gets recruited into the clandestine organization from the original series where he uses his knack for solving problems in unconventional ways to help prevent disasters from happening,” reports Deadline. “The CBS series is expected to chronicle how MacGyver acquired some of his famous skill sets.”
