Santos made a good living as the star attraction in “freak shows” in the 1970s and 1980s. He met his wife Evelyn on the road. She was a magician’s assistant in a carnival. In the documentary Evelyn says “it was love at first sight” when she met Rudy. “Even though he’s how he is, he’s kind, helpful, sweet and a loving man.” Now they live together with their daughter Liza in a shack, in poverty. When Rudy was examined by medical experts in 2008 who deemed him viable for removal surgery, Santos refused claiming “he had grown too attached to his appendages” to have them removed.
