Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Bernie Sanders will appear on Stephen Colbert’s new late night talk show tonight. And everyone who loves entertainment is hoping (against all odds) that for the interview Colbert will break into his recently discarded Comedy Central persona — that of a deeply conservative bloviator, along the lines of Bill O’Reilly. Because the old hilarious Colbert character was the political polar opposite of self-described socialist Bernie Sanders — and the dialogue between them would have been as awesome as the gap between their philosophies.
As it is, the “real,” more sober Colbert will talk earnestly with Sanders, as the Vermont senator (and thorn in Hillary Clinton’s side) explains how almost everybody in the US is losing because the system is rigged by the winners for the winners. The old Colbert Report Stephen would have attacked Sanders’ ideas like a Great White (pun intended) attacks a tuna. The new, thoughtful Colbert will give Sanders room to expose his humanity — as he did last week with VP Joe Biden in a much talked-about spot. Humanity is something the old Colbert never tried, which is why he was so funny. Here are Bernie Sanders and the old Stephen Colbert — at loggerheads:
