American actress Scarlett Johansson tried to stop a bestselling French novel from being translated into English or being made into a movie. The novel, La Première Chose Qu’on Regarde (The First Thing You See), is about a mechanic who meets a woman he believes is Johansson. Later on it’s revealed that it’s not really Johansson but a lookalike who has a number of affairs.
The real Scarlett Johansson sued the author, Grégoire Delacourt, saying the book was a “violation and fraudulent and illegal exploitation of her name, her reputation and her image.” A judge said it was defamatory but threw out the rest of the claims. The publishers of the novel, J-C Lattes, told the Guardian: “We just have to cut out the bit about the affairs.” The novel will be published in English on September 10 in the UK.
