Alondra Santos, the 13-year-old Mariachi singer who got a second chance on America’s Got Talent, proved she belonged on the stage of Radio City Music Hall at the semifinals. She took the words of the judges to heart; they were worried that her traditional style of singing wouldn’t attract a national audience.

Santos started her performance with the traditional Mariachi singing and then broke out into a modern number with a troupe of dancers who peeled off her traditional skirt so she could continue singing and dancing looking like a modern teenager wearing a trendy pair of floral jeans. “I’m so glad we asked you back,” said judge Howie Mandel. “You just blossomed. He added, “I don’t know what the words are but I couldn’t stop moving my ‘biddy biddy bum bum’.” (That’s a reference to the song.) Howard Stern commended Santos for making herself contemporary. “You just went from regional to national. A phenomenal performance.” Heidi Klum brought up a good point: even with all those colorful, vibrant dancers, she couldn’t keep her eyes off of Santos. If America agrees, Santos will be one of the 7 acts who will advance to the quarterfinals. America’s Got Talent airs Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 8pm on NBC.
