TLC is premiering a new reality TV show, I Am Jazz. It follows the life of a transgender teen in Florida named Jazz. She was born a boy and given the name Jared but by the time Jazz was 2, she knew she was a girl. She asked her mother, Jeanette, when the fairy was going to come and replace her penis with a vagina. But still, Jeanette forced Jazz to wear boys’ clothes to school. Jazz’s father, Greg, admitted to not being ready to walk outside with his son dressed as a girl. He said he was in denial and thought it was a passing phase.
Jeanette and Greg have come a long way and have accepted Jazz as a girl. They are now doing whatever it takes to make Jazz happy and are sharing some of their rawest emotions on the show. Their unconditional love is seen in the maturity of Jazz, a very well-adjusted teenager. But that doesn’t mean they worry less. Jazz is now transitioning from a young girl to a young lady about to enter high school. “I’m nervous,” says Jeanette. I Am Jazz premieres on July 15 at 10pm on TLC.
