Comic-Con International’s helpful tip #27 reads: “Wearing a Costume to Comic-Con? Check Our Costume Weapons Policy First!” Oh yeah, you think, it’s all fun and games and cosplay but then what a nightmare for security: thousands upon thousands of people disguised in costumes — often indistinguishable costumes. And now the topper: many of those costumes actually include a weapon.
Remember that scene from The Thomas Crown Affair where the thief flummoxes museum security by dressing dozens of people in the same costume from a Magritte painting? Well Comic-Con is the same thing, but bigger by orders of magnitude. And, again, the weapons — simulated guns, knives, swords, all kinds of stuff. “All costume weapons must be inspected at the Weapons Check Desk in Lobby E” reads Tip #27. Security obviously does a terrific job, even if it has to disappoint some Cosplayers whose “projectile weapons must be rendered inoperable.”
