Age hasn’t stopped actor Sir Ian McKellen from working. The 76-year-old is currently playing a 90-year-old Sherlock Holmes in Mr. Holmes. McKellen says that work helps him to feel young. He’s best known for his later-in-life roles as Gandalf in Lord of the Rings and Magneto in X-Men. The one big regret he has is not as an actor, but as a gay man.
In an interview with Sunday Times Culture, McKellen said he wished he had come out properly to his father before he died. (Denis McKellen died in 1964). Ian was 24 at the time, living with a man. “I think, if he’d lived a bit longer, I would have told him,” he said. For his next big project, McKellen will play a character obsessed with time, Cogsworth in Disney’s 2017 version of Beauty and the Beast.
