The Crow remake will star Boardwalk Empire‘s Jack Huston, but the latest on The Crow project delivers news that goes beyond The Crow itself: Top Dollar, the chief villain in the film will have a sex change. Top Dollar, originally a male character, will be portrayed in the new film by a woman. (Michael Wincott played Top Dollar in the earlier adaption.) Deadline reports that Andrea Riseborough (Birdman) is in talks to play Top Dollar. It goes beyond this particular movie because women have been hard to find in prominent roles in comics-based films.
A big change is probably a good idea for The Crow, a classic graphic novel whose 1994 adaptation was as haunted as the story. Star Brandon Lee was killed during filming by a gun that was supposed to contain blanks. The film nonetheless won critical praise and a loyal following. The new film is also written by a woman, Claire Wilson.
