Salma Hayek — the actress, director, producer and fiercely independent spirit — has seen her share of sexism in Hollywood. (Who hasn’t? One stat reports that only 4.4 percent of the top 100 box-office domestic releases between 2002 and 2012 were directed by women.)
Hayek was recently asked about how to redress the inequality that’s endemic in the movie industry. “The minute they see money, things will be instantaneously different,” Hayek said, referring to decision makers in Hollywood. Women need to demonstrate that “we are an economic force.” Hayek is right obviously — money talks. But Hayek may find some comfort and inspiration in perusing this awesome list of 1,400 films directed by women.
