More than 43,000 people have rated the new Bob Weir documentary and it stands now with an average of 4.2 out of 5 stars on Netflix. “Heartfelt, brutally honest,” are two of the most frequent accolades for The Other One: the Long Strange Trip of Bob Weir. “The final 5-8 minutes is something that has to be seen,” said one viewer who thought the film had a strong emotional trajectory. Naysayers wanted more than a “thin piece, bordering on PR.”
No argument about one thing: some of the old footage is pretty striking and evocative of a time that is long gone, never to return. The film’s title, of course, comes from the widespread perception that the Grateful Dead was really Jerry Garcia’s band, with Bobby being “the other one.” The Mike Fleiss-directed film tells the story that it both was — and it wasn’t.
