On Bones, Temperance “Bones” Brennan is afraid her father, Matthew Brennan (aka Max Keenan), is dabbling in crime again. He used to rob banks and, oh yeah, he killed FBI Director Robert Kirby after he tried to kill his daughter and son, Russ. Papa Brennan was brought to trial for the murder of Kirby but was cleared of the charges (on a technicality). That said, he’s a very charming guy and he’s sweet on his new granddaughter, Christine. He even babysits!
Matthew/Max is portrayed by Ryan O’Neal. He’s best known for his roles in films including Paper Moon with his real life daughter Tatum O’Neal (who won an Oscar for the film), Love Story with Ali McGraw, and The Main Event with Barbra Streisand. He lived with Farrah Fawcett (Charlie’s Angels) from 1980-1997. The soon to be 74-year-old (born Charles Samuel Eldridge Patrick Ryan O’Neal III) will appear in Terrence Malick’s next film, Knight of Cups, with Christian Bale, Natalie Portman and Cate Blanchette. It’s about a man in Hollywood (Bale) who’s addicted to success and grows bored. P.S. O’Neal and McGraw are reuniting for the upcoming national tour of LOVE LETTERS, a play by A.R. Gurney about first loves and second chances.
