On American Idol, Quentin Alexander’s behavior and inability to stay composed was in the spotlight last week, as he brawled with Harry Connick, Jr. Could the on-stage, improvised showdown that gave last week’s show its strange energy help Quentin this week? If he’s looking to build on his new reputation for rebellion, he’s picked the right artist. Even Harry Connick Jr. will agree.

Quentin’s plan to move from the Top 6 to the Top 5 is to tap the essence of one of rock music’s most notorious rulebreakers, Jim Morrison. Quentin will sing The Doors’ signature song “Light My Fire.” That won’t permit Quentin to shy away from his emotions–just the opposite. In 1967, The Doors were asked to sing “Light My Fire” on The Ed Sullivan Show. During rehearsals lead singer Jim Morrison was asked to sing the lyric, “girl, we couldn’t get much higher” to “girl, we couldn’t get much better.” He agreed, but on live TV Morrison sang the original. Sullivan refused to shake Morrison’s hand afterward. American Idol airs–LIVE–Wednesdays at 8pm on Fox.
