Actress Gabrielle Union stars in the scripted BET show Being Mary Jane. But that doesn’t mean she likes her character. Union admits that in real life she wouldn’t like Mary Jane. She told BuzzFeed: “I wouldn’t be friends with her. But if I can have compassion for myself and for my loved ones who haven’t always made the best decisions, for sure I can have compassion and empathy for my character.”
Union’s compassion is working. Being Mary Jane is BET’s most popular show. It “premiered to more than 4 million viewers in January 2013, a number no episode of Mad Men has yet reached.” Being Mary Jane will be back for a third season in 2016.
