The Amy Poehler-driven Smart Girls At The Party web series has been the older sister to all kinds of–well, smart girls–since it launched in 2007. It’s quite literally the future. Poehler founded the Smart Girls org with former SNL producer Meredith Walker–and the group actually does what a whole slew of web entities claim to do: Smart Girls provides a community.
More than 1.6 million “Smarties” from 45 countries chillin’ with their peers online under the Smart Girls banner, according to the site. The motto is “change the world by being yourself.” They don’t advocate fitting in. It’s a party–entertaining above all and also safe. No flaming, bullying or mean girls. Smart girls is more about laughs and curiosity. As a terrific post from Walker explains: Don’t be embarrassed might be another tenet of the community. You’re able to be a lot more curious if you’re less worried about being embarrassed. Poehler takes the same road in her generous, heartfelt, smart and, of course, funny video segments called Ask Amy–where she answers questions like an improv Dear Abby. Bring on the smart girl future! Or better yet, let’s note: the future is now!
