The copyright dispute that instigated the trial over “Blurred Lines” is turning up a money trail that usually stays private. Songwriting credit for the smash hit sung by Robin Thicke is being disputed in court by the late singer Marvin Gaye’s family. Exactly how much money is at stake is information critical to the proceedings.
Lawyers for both parties agree that “Blurred Lines” earned more than $16.6 million, with Pharrell Williams (producer/writer) and Robin Thicke getting more than $5 million each. Rapper T.I., also featured on the track, earned $700,000. Robin Thicke also earned an estimated $12 million from performing live, largely based on the song’s popularity.
