“All About That Bass” superstar singer Meghan Trainor recently performed at the Fillmore near Washington, DC, and not everyone was pleased. Include Ally Schweitzer of The Washington Post among the disappointed. After attending the show she says she misses the old Trainor — the one who was all about that acoustic pop just a few years ago, when Trainor’s sound was “sweet and earnest.” Schweitzer calls out Trainor’s phony accent. “The most curious thing about Trainor’s phony accent isn’t that she has one, but that she keeps it going outside of her raps. It’s there in her interviews. On NPR, faintly. And in concert.”
But it’s not just the accent that has fans like Schweitzer annoyed, it’s Trainor’s reliance on doo-wop, too. “Amy Winehouse made that sweetness sound troubled; Lily Allen made it wry. Trainor makes it sound like Disney,” complains Schweitzer. Ouch.
