The School of the Art Institute of Chicago is awarding an honorary doctorate to rapper and fashion designer Kanye West on May 11. Lisa Wainwright, dean of faculty and vice president of academic administration at the SAIC said “she had secured West the honor after reading an interview in which he said he wished he’d attended the school.” He also said in the interview that “art school was cool.” West did go to Chicago’s American Academy of Art but left to study English at Chicago State University, where he dropped out at the age of 20.
SAIC alum Corinna Kirsch says she’s “offended” that the school’s fees would fund “this nonsense.” She calls the move “a gimmick.”
