On the new drama American Crime, drug user Carter Nix has been arrested as a suspect in the murder of young war veteran Matt Skokie. While Matt’s mother Barb seeks justice and another hate crime charge against Carter (Carter is black, Matt was white), Carter receives some relief in jail when his sister shows up for a visit. Aliyah is there to support her brother in need but as a devout Muslim she tells him she disapproves of his lifestyle (meth) and his relationship with girlfriend Aubry (white).
Aliyah is portrayed by the young veteran actress Regina King. She started her career as a child on the TV show 227 which launched an impressive career. In film, her most memorable roles are as Cuba Gooding Jr’s wife in Jerry Maguire and Ray Charles’ backup singer and mother of one of his kids, Margie Hendricks, in Ray. On TV, King is also known as Sandra Palmer in 24, Detective Lydia Adams in Southland, Gail Johnson on Shameless, and Janine Davis on The Big Bang Theory. Expect to see more of King on American Crime which airs Thursdays at 10pm on ABC.
