Gordon and Bullock hunt down maniacal murderer Gerald Crane on the TV show “Gotham” (February 9, 8pm, Fox). Crane is a biology teacher who “harvests the glands of his murder victims.” Does Crane look familiar? He should. That’s British actor Julian Sands. His first major leading role was in the 1985 Oscar nominated film A Room with a View, based on the E. M. Forster novel.
Sands has had an interesting career. He’s had significant roles in other well-received films including The Killing Fields and Leaving Las Vegas. And he’s no stranger to American TV — he played Vladimir Bierko on the popular series 24. But his career took a hit after he starred in the 1993 mystery/romance, Boxing Helena, with Sherilyn Fenn. It is considered by many to be one of the worst films of all time. Sands plays Nick Cavanaugh, a surgeon who becomes obsessed with a woman who survives a car accident. He kidnaps her and then starts amputating her limbs. (Let’s just leave it at that.) Now that we think about, Gerald Crane isn’t too different from Nick Cavanaugh.
