Homophobia isn’t new to rap. It’s central to it, in many ways: male machismo needs a vulnerable target. But it is surprising that the latest example of homophobia isn’t from Eminem, but Azealia Banks. Why? Because she’s bisexual. When she’s not redefining or adding to the word “faggot,” Banks is attacking gay editors and the gay media mafia for not buying her version of the word and her view of gay men.
Additionally, it must be tough going for those who follow her tweets and her desperate struggle to gain control of a conversation she perhaps should have avoided altogether. But that’s the problem with social media, the pull to opine is great, and you get Banks stuff like this: @mitchsunderland and even if i am a homophobe… so wat? i still make more $ than you.. still have an extra hole.. and still own everything [sic]”
