George Clooney will receive the Cecil B. DeMille Award at this year’s Golden Globes, and while he deserves it for his “outstanding contributions” to the world of entertainment, there are some who think his outstanding contributions to the world of pranking are also prizeworthy. Clooney is a famous joker, and last year embroiled his friend Matt Damon in a revenge prank on Golden Globes hosts Amy Poehler and Tina Fey. At last year’s awards Fey brilliantly mocked Clooney (“Gravity is nominated for best film. It’s the story of how George Clooney would rather float away into space and die than spend one more minute with a woman his own age”) and joked that Damon was “a garbage person” among the stars. Clooney commented afterwards that the barbs at him were “well-crafted” but “they have poked the bear with a stick.” He ordered stationery with Damon’s name on it and used it to send a letter to Poehler and Fey supposedly from Damon, explaining how hurt he was (“My kid now calls me the garbageman”).
It doesn’t end there. Damon received two enormous fruit baskets from Poehler and Fey, along with two letters, one apologizing for the garbageman crack, the other admonishing Damon for being a part of Clooney’s prank. “Dear Matt, If your note is part of some George Clooney prank, as I very strongly suspect it is, you A-list amateurs are going to have to step it the f%ck up. We are not some easily confused starlets here. We are grown-ass, professional comedians. Please accept this fruit as a token of our sincerity. Best wishes, Elizabeth Tina Fey, Amy ‘Boston’ Poehler.” Clooney and Damon relayed the story on EW Radio last February when they were promoting Monuments Men. Clooney said then that the Damon stationery letter prank was “the appetizer” and the “main course would be pretty brutal.” Clooney is even wondering if he should go through with it. “If I do this, this is downright dirty.” That was almost a year ago; Clooney is known to take months to prepare his elaborate gags. Are Poehler and Fey ready for a prank-off with Clooney? Tune in to see.
