Are American lexicographers more cultured than their British counterparts? While the people at the Oxford Dictionary declared Vape (smoking an e-cigarette) as Word of the Year, the Merriam-Webster folks deemed it should be Culture. Based on the amount of times the word was searched online in 2014, people seem very interested in culture: corporate culture, celebrity culture, rape culture, gaming culture (blame GamerGate for that).
I for one am relieved to see that people are still interested in “culture”, whatever form it takes. I was concerned the word of the year might just be Kardass©.
